    Department Information

    1. History

    • In 2003, the Ministry of Health decided to establish the Ophthalmology Department. Since then, the Ophthalmology Department has made remarkable progress. Many modern techniques have been applied in the healthcare of the people.

    2. Functions and Duties

    • Medical Examination and Treatment: Organizing emergency care and providing medical examination and treatment for all patients with ocular conditions at Bach Mai Hospital. Coordinating with other institutes and departments within the hospital for comprehensive medical care.
    • Training: Serving as a training facility for nurses, doctors, and students from Hanoi Medical University, VNU University of Medicine and Pharmacy, VinUni, Bach Mai Medical College... providing internship opportunities and advanced professional training.
    • Scientific Research: Conducting scientific research and applying new techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
    • Direction of Healthcare Activities: Providing professional and technical support to lower-level medical facilities as assigned by the Hospital.
    • International Cooperation: Collaborating with international organizations and experts to update knowledge and advanced technology in the field of Ophthalmology.

    3. Professional Techniques and Specialized Services

    • Phacoemulsification surgery for complex cases (pupillary miosis, capsular tension ring insertion); sutureless small-incision cataract surgery (SICS).
    • Pars Plana Vitrectomy.
    • Lacrimal duct reconstruction, dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) with silicone intubation.
    • Trabeculectomy for glaucoma treatment.
    • Optical iridectomy and pupilloplasty.
    • Pterygium surgery with autologous conjunctival grafting.
    • Strabismus (squint) and ptosis (drooping eyelid) surgery.
    • Laser therapy for fundus (retinal) diseases.
    • Treatment of retinal diseases with anti-VEGF (anti-vascular endothelial growth factor) agents.
    • Management of blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm.
    • Retinoscopy, monitoring, and control of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).
