Department Information
1. History
- The Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery was established on October 21, 2020. Throughout its formation and development, the department has consistently fulfilled its mission of public healthcare while evolving into a leading unit in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery in Northern Vietnam. Key characteristics: The Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery is a specialized unit under Bach Mai Hospital and serves as the primary training facility for the Department of Plastic Surgery, Hanoi Medical University.
2. Organizational Structure
- The department currently operates with 40 inpatient beds, 03 clinics, and 02 minor surgery rooms. The personnel structure consists of 26 staff members (8 Doctors, 14 Nurses, 2 Orderlies, and 2 Medical Secretaries).
3. Functions and Missions
- Examine and treat pathologies in the field of plastic and aesthetic surgery using modern medical equipment and advanced, continuously updated medical techniques.
Establish medical cooperation relationships to expand operations and update specialized knowledge.
Teach and train to improve professional qualifications and skills for medical staff in the field of plastic and aesthetic surgery.
Develop scientific research activities and apply medical achievements in patient care.
Support lower-level healthcare facilities to improve local primary healthcare quality, contributing to reducing overcrowding in specialized hospitals in Hanoi.
Implement international cooperation programs to develop public healthcare activities under state direction.
4. Areas of Operation
With an experienced professional team of Professors, Doctors, and specialized Nurses, along with state-of-the-art facilities and operating rooms, the Department focuses on high-tech developments in two main areas:
Pathological Plastic Surgery:
- Basic and Emergency Plastic Surgery: Management of maxillofacial wounds and traumas, emergency hand surgery, microsurgery for vascular and nerve repair, replantation of severed limbs or body parts, and soft tissue defect coverage.
- Congenital Malformation Plastic Surgery: Craniofacial clefts, cleft lip and palate, polydactyly, syndactyly, amniotic bands, vaginal malformations, labia and penile anomalies, disorders of sexual development, pediatric hemangiomas, and vascular malformations (arterial, capillary, venous, lymphatic), as well as congenital skin abnormalities (melanocytic nevi, warts).
- Tumor and Cancer Plastic Surgery: Benign surface or subcutaneous tumors (fibromas, lipomas, sebaceous cysts); reconstruction after cancer excision (skin, muscle, bone, and prominent organ cancers such as nose, ear, breast, penis).
- Reconstructive Surgery for Sequelae: Treatment for scars resulting from burns, trauma, surgery, or radiotherapy.
- Reconstruction for Pathological Soft Tissue Defects: Ulcers caused by Gout, diabetes, vascular occlusion necrosis, animal bites, etc.
Aesthetic Surgery:
- Facial Area: Rhinoplasty, alar base reduction, dorsal hump reduction; blepharoplasty (upper and lower), fat removal, double eyelid surgery, ptosis repair; otoplasty for prominent or microtia ears; lip contouring (heart-shaped lips, lip thinning or thickening); orthognathic surgery (jaw bone adjustment, jaw reduction, cheekbone reduction); scar revision; facelift, fat grafting for facial rejuvenation; filler and Botox injections.
- Body Area: Breast reduction for hypertrophy, mastopexy (breast lift), breast augmentation, nipple and areola reduction/reconstruction, gynecomastia surgery for men, gender-affirming mastectomy.
- Genital/Intimate Area: Vaginal rejuvenation, perineal scar revision, labiaplasty, clitoral hood reduction.
