Department Information
1. History
- 1959: The Board of Directors of Bach Mai Hospital decided to separate the Pediatrics Department from the Internal Medicine Department, establishing an independent Pediatrics unit, marking a step in specialized healthcare for children.
- 1959 – 2019: Over 60 years of construction and development, the Pediatrics Department has become a leading institution in examination, treatment, training, and research.
- 2000 – 2001: With support from JICA (Japan), the department received modern medical equipment and human resource training. During this period, the Neonatal Unit was established under an Obstetrics-Pediatrics link model, successfully handling many fragile neonatal cases.
- 2021: The Center for Pediatrics was established based on the merger and development of the Pediatrics Department – Bach Mai Hospital, to enhance professional capacity, expand operations, and better meet the increasing demand for pediatric healthcare.
2. Functions and Missions
- Examining, diagnosing, treating, and providing comprehensive care for inpatient and outpatient pediatric patients.
- Performing specialized techniques in areas such as emergency resuscitation, blood filtration, artificial kidney, and mechanical ventilation.
- Training and fostering pediatric medical staff for lower-level facilities as assigned by the Ministry of Health.
- Participating in scientific research and applying modern medical advances to pediatric treatment practices.
- International cooperation in training, technology transfer, and scientific research.
3. Outstanding Activities and Techniques
- Implementing various specialized techniques in pediatric and neonatal resuscitation, such as continuous blood filtration, therapeutic hypothermia, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, and cardiovascular intervention.
- Closely coordinating with other specialties in the hospital (Surgery, Cardiology, Respiratory, Adult Intensive Care, Clinical Pharmacy...) to manage complex, multi-specialty pediatric cases.
- Providing practical training and technology transfer to many provincial and district-level hospitals under the 1816 Program and the Satellite Hospital Project.
- Participating in and organizing numerous workshops and continuous training courses, contributing to improving the quality of pediatric treatment and care in the Northern region and nationwide.
