    1. History
    The Nephrology, Urology and Dialysis Centre is a specialized clinical unit of Bach Mai Hospital. It was officially established on October 21, 2020, through the merger of the Department of Artificial Kidney and the Department of Nephrology and Urology, following the resolution of the Party Committee, the Management Board, and the Director of Bach Mai Hospital.

    2. Organizational Structure
    The Centre currently consists of two main units:

    • Inpatient Treatment Unit: Specializing in Nephrology, Urology, Kidney Transplantation, and Andrology.
    • Outpatient Treatment Unit: Specializing in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis.

    With a workforce of 145 personnel, the Centre boasts a team of highly skilled doctors, pharmacists, and engineers. This includes 37 doctors (comprising 1 Associate Professor, 3 PhDs, 6 Level II Specialists, 25 Masters/Residents, and 2 Level I Specialists) and 87 nurses. Many physicians also hold concurrent academic positions at the Department of Internal Medicine, Hanoi Medical University.

    3. Functions and Missions

    • Medical Examination and Treatment: Providing inpatient and outpatient care, including Arteriovenous Fistula (AVF) surgery and advanced diagnostic techniques.
    • Training: Providing comprehensive training for nurses and doctors at all levels (Vocational, College, Undergraduate, Master's, PhD, and Specialty levels).
    • Direction of Healthcare Activities: Supporting professional development and technology transfer to lower-level medical facilities.
    • Scientific Research: Engaging in domestic and international cooperation and clinical research.
    • Advisory Role: Consulting for the Hospital and the Ministry of Health on specialized legal and technical documents.
    • Technical Services: Producing RO water for dialysis, dialysis fluid preparation, and maintenance of dialysis machinery.

    4. Key Medical Achievements and Techniques
    The Centre operates at high intensity, achieving significant milestones in various areas:

    4.1. Inpatient Treatment

    • Successfully treats over 6,000 inpatients annually.
    • Focuses on early diagnosis and optimized treatment regimens to significantly reduce hospital stay duration.

    4.2. Outpatient Services

    • Operates multiple clinics across the Department of Medical Examination and the Department of On-demand Medical Examination.
      In 2024, the Centre conducted over 72,000 examinations for nephro-urological diseases and 17,000 examinations for andrological conditions.

    4.3. Dialysis and Technical Operations

    • Maintains a fleet of 80 dialysis machines, performing over 41,000 maintenance cycles per year.
    • Performs nearly 14,000 emergency dialysis sessions annually, saving hundreds of critically ill patients.
    • Provides periodic dialysis for 340–350 patients.
    • Leading the digital transformation with comprehensive Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

    4.4. Kidney Transplantation
    Kidney transplantation is one of the six key professional pillars of Bach Mai Hospital. The Centre plays a primary role in:

    • Patient screening and pre-transplant consultation.
    • Post-transplant monitoring and long-term care.
    • Successfully performed 4 kidney transplants from brain-dead donors following the reactivation of the transplant program.

    5. Advanced Medical Techniques
    The Centre applies cutting-edge technologies, including:

    • Kidney Transplantation and Kidney Biopsy.
    • Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).
    • Plasma Exchange (PEX).
    • High-tech Dialysis: HDF online, Hemoperfusion, and Ultrafiltration.
    • Vascular Access Surgery: AVF creation, vascular transposition, and prosthetic grafts.
    • Central Venous Catheter and Tunneled Catheter insertion.
    • Cystoscopy and Specialized Ultrasound (Urological and Vascular).
