1. History
- 1981: The Gastroenterology Department of Bach Mai Hospital was established from the Gastroenterology Unit – General Internal Medicine Department.
- 2000: The Gastroenterology Department was split into two: Gastroenterology Department and Functional Exploration Department.
- 2020 – Present: The Gastroenterology Department and Functional Exploration Department merged to establish the Center for Gastroenterology and Hepatology. With over 43 years of history, the Center is proud to be one of the leading spearhead specialties of Bach Mai Hospital. The Center has successfully performed many endoscopic intervention techniques equivalent to developed nations like Japan and South Korea. In the near future, the Center plans to expand outpatient clinics and inpatient beds to better serve patients' needs.
3. Functions and Missions
The Center is oriented as a specialized, multi-functional unit, focusing on the following main activities:
3.1. Functions
- Specialized examination, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal, liver, biliary, and pancreatic diseases.
- Application of high technology in digestive endoscopy and minimally invasive interventions.
- Scientific research.
- Training of gastroenterology and hepatology human resources for the whole country.
- International cooperation in diagnosis, treatment, and technology transfer.
3.2. Specific Missions
- Professional Field: Receiving, classifying, diagnosing, and treating internal gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases. Performing high-tech techniques such as interventional endoscopy (polypectomy, hemostasis, ERCP, EUS, stenting), Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for liver tumors, and advanced imaging (fibroscan).
- Training and Technology Transfer: Training specialists, residents, and technicians; organizing short-term courses and workshops; transferring technology to lower-level hospitals.
- Scientific Research: Researching new methods, leading Ministry-level and State-level projects, and publishing in domestic and international journals.
- International Cooperation: Partnering with leading centers (Japan, South Korea, France...) for expert and technology exchange and participating in multi-national research projects.
- Community Healthcare: Raising awareness and preventing diseases through communication programs.
- Quality Assurance and Patient Safety: Building standard treatment protocols, supervising infection control, and applying IT for electronic medical record management.
4. Outstanding Activities and Techniques
- International Cooperation & Specialized Workshops: Serving as a bridge for exchanging knowledge and updating new treatment trends (e.g., AI application in endoscopy). Attracting top experts from Japan, South Korea, and the USA.
- Advanced Training: Providing high-tech training courses (ESD, ERCP, POEM) for lower-level doctors and specialized fellowship programs.
- Advanced Techniques: Implementing magnified endoscopy for early cancer diagnosis, endoscopic ultrasound, and AI-integrated endoscopy.
