Department Information
1. History
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) originated from the Psychiatry Department of Bach Mai Hospital, which was established in 1911.
- 1959: Merged with the Neurology Department to form the Neuropsychiatry Department.
- 1969: Formally separated into two independent departments: Psychiatry and Neurology.
- August 8, 1991: The National Institute of Mental Health was officially established under Decision No. 784/QD-BYT by the Ministry of Health, based on the Psychiatry Department (Bach Mai Hospital) in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry (Hanoi Medical University) and Central Mental Hospital I.
2. Functions and Missions
As the leading institution in Psychiatry, NIMH performs the following roles:
- Medical Examination and Treatment: Providing emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care for all mental disorders.
- Scientific Research: Leading research on urgent psychiatric and psychosocial issues.
- Training: Providing undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatric education to serve community mental health care.
- Professional Direction: Coordinating with Central Mental Hospitals to provide technical clinical direction (line management) nationwide.
- Forensic Psychiatry: Performing forensic psychiatric evaluations in coordination with the National Institute of Forensic Psychiatry.
- International Cooperation: Collaborating with international organizations to enhance psychiatric activities in Vietnam.
Community Education: Promoting mental health awareness and knowledge among the public.
3. Strategic Goals and Mission
- Goal: To enhance and protect mental health, effectively prevent disorders, and ensure patients have access to high-quality, timely, and culturally appropriate medical and social care.
- Mission: To provide professional, high-quality, and constantly innovating medical services to ensure patient satisfaction.
- Vision: To be the first choice for patients in the field of mental health care, providing comprehensive and effective services.
4. Outstanding Achievements
- Clinical Care: Operating 274 inpatient beds (averaging 250-300 inpatients per day) and handling 300-400 outpatient visits daily.
- Specialized Services: Computerized EEG, Video-EEG, Rheoencephalography, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Electrocardiogram (ECG), Psychological Counseling/Therapy, and Psychological Testing.
- Scientific Research: Successfully completed 01 national-level project, 05 ministerial-level projects, and 68 institutional-level projects.
