Department Information
1. History
- 1911: Established by the French as "Cong Vong Infectious Disease Hospital," the predecessor of the Infectious Diseases Department and Bach Mai Hospital.
- 1945 – 1954: Remained the Infectious-Tuberculosis treatment area of Bach Mai Hospital. Later, the Tuberculosis specialty was separated, and it became the Infectious Diseases Department.
- November 11, 1989: The Ministry of Health established the Institute of Clinical Medicine for Tropical Diseases (ICMTD) under Bach Mai Hospital by merging the Department of Infectious Diseases, the Department of Medical Microbiology (Bach Mai Hospital), and the Department of Infectious Diseases (Hanoi Medical University).
- 2003: Gained global recognition for successfully treating and eradicating SARS in Vietnam, receiving the "Labor Hero" title.
- August 4, 2006: The Ministry of Health re-established the Infectious Diseases Department - Bach Mai Hospital by separating it from the ICMTD.
- March 6, 2019: The Center for Tropical Diseases was established based on the Infectious Diseases Department.
- February 24, 2025: Bach Mai Institute of Tropical Medicine was officially established based on the Center for Tropical Diseases.
2. Functions and Missions
- The Institute serves as the tertiary referral center (final level) for the examination and treatment of patients with infectious diseases. It actively participates in epidemic prevention and control, providing clinical direction (line management), scientific research, and international cooperation.

4. Outstanding Achievements
- Clinical Excellence: Highly reputable in diagnosing and treating viral hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, severe tetanus, septic shock with multi-organ failure, meningitis, severe malaria complications, and Dengue hemorrhagic fever.
- Epidemic Control: Successfully managed major outbreaks including acute diarrhea (2007), Hand-Foot-Mouth disease (2008), Influenza A H1N1, Measles, and COVID-19 (supporting hotspots like Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, etc.).
- Training and Education: Organizes numerous residency and specialist training programs, online training (telehealth), and provides 1816 program support for Northern provinces.
International Cooperation: Collaborates with prestigious organizations such as US CDC, Harvard Medical School (HAIVN), Bill Clinton Foundation, Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU), Nagasaki University, and Karolinska Institute.
- Advanced Techniques: The Tropical Disease Intensive Care Unit performs high-tech interventions including invasive mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), plasma exchange (PEX), and interventional ultrasound.
