Continuing a Medical Legacy in Arrhythmia Treatment
The Melvin Scheinman Heart Rhythm Education Foundation, established in 2024, aims to honor and continue the legacy of Professor Melvin M. Scheinman, Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF Health) and widely regarded as the pioneer of catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmias.

In 1981, Professor Scheinman performed the world’s first successful catheter ablation of the atrioventricular (AV) node in humans. This groundbreaking procedure marked a major milestone in arrhythmia treatment, enabling many patients to avoid open-heart surgery and long-term medication therapy.

The Foundation’s mission is to promote professional training and technology transfer through hands-on clinical education, particularly in developing countries.

The signing ceremony was held in a formal and cordial atmosphere, marking an important milestone in the long-term partnership between the two organizations.

Practical Cooperation Toward Sustainable Development
Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai, Director of the National Heart Institute at Bach Mai Hospital, reported that since 2024, the Foundation has sent several American experts to Vietnam to provide training, technical guidance, and clinical instruction at the National Heart Institute.

At the same time, three physicians from Bach Mai Hospital have been supported to study and practice in the United States. These exchanges have enabled the hospital’s cardiologists to gain direct exposure to advanced cardiac electrophysiology techniques, strengthening their ability to manage complex cases and supporting long-term professional development.

Addressing the ceremony, Ms. Jena Humer, Vice President of the Melvin Scheinman Heart Rhythm Education Foundation, expressed her appreciation for the hospital’s openness and strong commitment to training and patient care.

According to her, the Memorandum of Understanding represents more than a formal agreement—it reflects the shared determination of both sides to build sustainable professional capacity and to develop the National Heart Institute at Bach Mai Hospital into a reputable regional center for arrhythmia diagnosis, treatment, and training.

Enhancing Treatment Quality for Patients
In his remarks, Associate Professor Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, highlighted the significance of this collaboration in the context of the growing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States.

He emphasized that as the country’s leading tertiary general hospital, Bach Mai Hospital not only provides treatment for severe and complex cases but also serves as a national center for training, research, and medical technology transfer.

According to the hospital director, cardiac arrhythmias are common yet complex conditions that require highly specialized expertise and advanced medical technologies. Cooperation with the Melvin Scheinman Heart Rhythm Education Foundation is therefore considered a meaningful “New Year gift,” bringing direct benefits to Vietnamese patients while offering valuable opportunities for the hospital’s young physicians to access and learn from advanced medical practices in the United States.

During the ceremony, Associate Professor Dao Xuan Co presented a commemorative gift to Ms. Jena Humer, Vice President of the Foundation, as a gesture of appreciation for the organization’s support and partnership.

Toward Long-Term Medical Collaboration
Under the Memorandum of Understanding, the two parties agreed to cooperate in several key areas, including:

Professional training and hands-on practice in advanced cardiac electrophysiology techniques. Clinical mentoring and consultation in complex arrhythmia interventions. Development and standardization of clinical procedures in line with international standards. Experience sharing, research collaboration, and the development of future training programs.
The signing ceremony concluded in a warm and cooperative atmosphere, marking the beginning of a long-term partnership between Bach Mai Hospital and the Melvin Scheinman Heart Rhythm Education Foundation, contributing to the advancement of cardiovascular expertise and improved patient care in Vietnam.
