On the occasion of its 115th anniversary, reflections from international students highlight the appeal of a major medical institution where professional expertise and medical ethics are harmoniously integrated.
First impressions of a “special-class” healthcare ecosystem
When Julian Mader (University of Cologne, Germany) and Julie Mathew (Cardiff University, UK) arrived in Hanoi, they brought with them curiosity about tropical medicine. After their clinical rotations at Bach Mai, what remained was not only knowledge but also a deeper understanding of a large-scale, efficiently operating healthcare environment.

Student Samuel Jung (University of Cologne, Germany)
Unlike the typically quieter atmosphere of European hospitals, the fast-paced workflow at Bach Mai offered a striking experience for international students. Julian Mader and Samuel Jung noted their impression of the hospital’s highly specialized system and its capacity to receive and treat a large volume of patients while maintaining stable professional operations.
For Julie Mathew, the most lasting impression came from the dedication of the medical staff, who are constantly present and attentive. Her observations helped reshape initial perceptions about resource conditions, while highlighting the relentless efforts of healthcare professionals in patient care.
When clinical practice becomes the teacher
At Bach Mai, textbook knowledge is brought to life through hands-on clinical experience. International students have opportunities to encounter a wide range of conditions, including cases rarely seen in developed countries.
At the Poison Control Center and the Department of Dermatology and Burns, students observed cases of agricultural chemical poisoning and rare conditions such as bullous pemphigoid. These experiences contributed to strengthening their knowledge and enhancing clinical competence.
In addition, working alongside specialists at the Neurology Center helped students develop diagnostic thinking in real-world settings. As Samuel Jung shared, direct patient interaction provides clearer insights into complex medical cases.

Human-centered activities within the hospital also left a strong emotional impact. The organ donor memorial ceremony, in particular, helped international students gain a deeper appreciation of medical ethics and the spirit of compassion in healthcare.
Hospital Administration Office – A bridge for international students
“The reception and support for international students at Bach Mai are implemented in a systematic manner. The Hospital Administration Office serves as the focal point for procedural guidance and organizes cultural experience activities, becoming a reliable support system for international students,” said MSc. Nguyen Thi Huong, Chief of the Hospital Administration Office.
Through visits to sites such as the Trang An Landscape Complex, Bat Trang Pottery Village, and the Temple of Literature, students gain further insight into Vietnam’s history and culture.
At the same time, direct guidance from doctors across departments helps students quickly adapt to both the learning and clinical practice environment.
Affirming its role in training and international integration
Throughout its development, Bach Mai Hospital has continuously expanded international cooperation in education and research. Each year, the hospital welcomes students from countries such as the UK, Germany, Australia, and Japan for study and clinical training.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Van Giap, Deputy Director of the hospital and Director of the Bach Mai Institute of Medical Training and Research, noted that attracting international students is a testament to the hospital’s reputation and training quality. In the coming time, the institution will continue to promote digital transformation, apply smart healthcare technologies, and standardize training activities in line with international standards.
With 115 years of development as its foundation, Bach Mai Hospital continues to affirm its position as a leading medical institution and a reputable center for medical education in the region and globally, contributing to elevating the standing of Vietnamese medicine.
