March 18, 2026, marked an important milestone as Bach Mai Hospital welcomed a delegation from Hue Central Hospital to assess and support the transfer of techniques for heart and heart valve procurement and transplantation.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Xuan Co stated that the hospital has long nurtured its vision for developing organ transplantation and now possesses all the necessary conditions — in terms of human resources, infrastructure, and legal framework - to proceed.

As a tertiary referral center receiving numerous severe and end-stage cases, he emphasized that implementing heart transplantation is not only a professional advancement but also a pressing clinical necessity.

Strengthening collaboration between major medical centers

The partnership between Bach Mai Hospital and Hue Central Hospital is seen as a crucial step in advancing heart transplantation techniques.

During the working session, the expert delegation conducted site assessments of the Cardiovascular Institute, operating rooms, and intensive care units. Based on these evaluations, both sides discussed and agreed upon technical protocols, professional procedures, and relevant legal requirements.

Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep noted that with more than 1,300 open-heart surgeries performed annually - including many complex cases - Bach Mai Hospital is well-positioned to implement heart transplantation in the near future. Hue Central Hospital also committed to ongoing professional support to ensure safe and effective implementation.

On this occasion, Bach Mai’s medical teams were awarded certification in heart and heart valve procurement and transplantation techniques, providing a critical foundation for human resource development.
