Overcoming limited medical conditions onboard, Prof. Dr. Mai Duy Ton, Director of the Stroke Center at Bach Mai Hospital, promptly examined and managed a foreign passenger showing signs of facial paralysis, helping the flight avoid an emergency landing.

Emergency at cruising altitude

On the night of May 4, 2026, Flight VN19 from Hanoi to Paris (France) encountered a medical emergency while cruising at high altitude. About four hours into the flight, repeated announcements were made requesting medical assistance.

A male foreign passenger began experiencing discomfort and ear pain, which quickly progressed to paralysis of the left side of his face, making communication and speech difficult.

Concern spread among the patient, his companion, and the flight crew, as any decision made mid-air could directly affect the passenger’s health and might even require an unscheduled emergency landing in another country.

Accurate diagnosis – a decisive turning point

Upon hearing the call for assistance, Prof. Dr. Mai Duy Ton—one of Vietnam’s leading stroke specialists who happened to be on board—immediately came forward to examine the patient.

Based on clinical assessment, he determined that the condition was a typical case of peripheral facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) palsy, not an acute stroke. This diagnosis was crucial, as it enabled appropriate onboard management using corticosteroid medication and allowed him to advise the captain to continue the flight as planned, avoiding a disruptive emergency landing.

This decision proved to be a turning point, easing the psychological stress on the patient, his family, and the entire flight crew.

To ensure safety, Prof. Dr. Mai Duy Ton administered corticosteroids he had on hand and recommended that the crew proceed with the scheduled journey.

Before landing at Charles de Gaulle Airport, the patient’s condition had stabilized and vital indicators were within safe limits.

Spreading the ethics of Vietnamese physicians

After receiving a report of the incident from France, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, expressed his appreciation for Prof. Dr. Mai Duy Ton’s sense of responsibility and professionalism.

He stated: “Professor Mai Duy Ton’s actions not only demonstrate the professional excellence of Bach Mai Hospital’s medical staff but also embody the spirit of ‘For the People’s Health.’ Wherever they are, Bach Mai physicians are always ready to step forward, bringing safety and reassurance to the community. This is a core value that must continue to be upheld and spread.”

The hospital’s leadership also emphasized a development strategy centered on people, with continuous improvement in professional capacity so that each healthcare worker becomes a “medical ambassador” of Vietnam in the process of international integration.

On behalf of the flight crew, the captain of Flight VN19 sent a letter of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Mai Duy Ton: “Thank you very much. We wish you good health and continued success in your work.”

A message from the front line

From France, Prof. Dr. Mai Duy Ton shared a message with younger colleagues: healthcare professionals, wherever they are, should be proactive and ready to assist when medical situations arise, contributing to community safety.

The story of Flight VN19 once again affirms the reputation and standing of Vietnamese healthcare. With strong expertise, a deep sense of responsibility, and compassion, Vietnamese doctors continue to enhance the country’s imagewhether in hospital wards or high above the clouds.
